Privacy Policy
ClearSkys is a stargazing forecast app. We believe in transparency and minimal data collection.
No cookies. No tracking. No ads. No data sold. Anonymous analytics only. Your account data is yours.
Cookies
We don't use cookies. At all. No session cookies, no tracking cookies, no third-party cookies. Our analytics tool (Umami) is completely cookie-free and GDPR compliant by design.
Analytics
We use self-hosted Umami analytics to understand how the app is used — things like page views, device types, and which features people use. This data is fully anonymous, contains no personal information, and cannot be used to identify you. No data is shared with third parties.
Accounts & saved data
If you create an account, we store your email address, saved locations, and notification preferences in Supabase (our database provider). This data is used solely to provide the service — loading your saved locations, sending you stargazing alerts, and authenticating your sessions.
Signing in with Google
If you choose to sign in with Google, Google shares your email address and basic profile information (name and profile picture) with us so we can create and identify your account. We request only basic profile and email access — nothing more. We don't post anything to your Google account or access any other Google data. Google's handling of your information is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
Push notifications
If you enable push notifications, your browser generates a unique push subscription endpoint. We store this to send you stargazing alerts. You can disable notifications at any time from the Manage Locations screen, and we'll delete your subscription data.
Location data
When you search for a location or use GPS, coordinates are sent to our server to generate the forecast. To check and improve forecast quality, we keep the coordinates of forecast requests rounded to about 1 km, with no account or device attached: for up to 5 days to measure how stable a forecast is, and for up to 180 days to evaluate our directional cloud notes. Saved locations (if you have an account) are stored so we can load them for you and check notification conditions.
Third-party services
We host ClearSkys on Hetzner servers in Germany. Forecasts use weather data from Open-Meteo (CC BY 4.0), served from our own servers, and MET Norway, which receives the coordinates of the place you are viewing. Location search uses Photon (komoot) and OpenStreetMap Nominatim, which receive what you type. Aurora data comes from NOAA. Accounts and saved locations are stored with Supabase; sign-in with Google is optional. Error reports go to Sentry, with personal data collection turned off. Email digests are sent through IONOS, which receives your email address. Push notifications are delivered by your browser or device's push service (Google, Apple or Mozilla). Each service has its own privacy policy. We never share personal data with the forecast services, only coordinates.
Your rights
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time. If you have questions, you can reach us at hello@clearskys.app.
