Montevideo, on Uruguay's Atlantic coast at 34.9°S, has Bortle 7 city skies but quick access to dark country across Uruguay's sparsely populated, gently rolling interior. Bortle 3–4 conditions are reachable within an hour, and the rural east and north offer darker skies still. At this southern latitude the sky is superbly placed: the Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross, and the galactic core (high overhead in winter) are all on display, and the aurora australis is very occasionally glimpsed over the southern horizon during major storms. The temperate climate gives frequent clear nights, especially in autumn.
