Tokyo's vast metropolitan area creates Bortle 9 conditions across the Kanto Plain, but the Moon, planets, and bright targets remain visible. The mountains of Chichibu (90 minutes west) offer Bortle 4 skies, and Mount Fuji's fifth station provides high-altitude access. Japan's tsuyu (rainy season, June–July) is the worst period; autumn brings the clearest conditions with stable Pacific high pressure. Winter nights are cold but often crystal clear, with excellent seeing.
